Fellas, it’s 2024
Long gone are the days where we bathed in rivers, exfoliated with stones, or didn’t bathe at all. The time has come for you to take care of your skin.
As a former barber, it’s nice to see a renaissance of men beginning to pamper themselves a little (There’s a great piece about this by Brook Reitz here - Dudes, Pamper Thyself). In most of my growing up, men have been at the forefront of being called to take care of others, but have drastically fallen short of allowing themselves to be taken care of as well. Whether that’s physical, mental, or spiritual health, a number of dudes haven’t allowed themselves to be taken care of. That’s why so many men love going to see their barber, because it’s the one place where they can slow down and feel like it’s socially acceptable to be cared for.
I come before you today to offer you a simple step in pampering yourself. Take care of your skin. Now I know that sometimes this topic can seem scary, and yes I’m going to tell you to throw out your 3 in 1 body, face, and hair wash, but hear me out. Finding the right products to replace old reliable doesn’t have to be difficult, and it doesn’t have to feel too feminine if you’re concerned about that sort of thing. Let me put you on to something simple and easy, and isn’t going to take up your whole day. It’s called Magnolia League
Magnolia League (the skincare brand) is a brand by a friend of mine that makes skin care easy and approachable for us dudes. It’s founded in Atlanta, GA and is named magnolia league after the souths attempt at creating a southern Ivy League campaign to rival those of the Ivy League schools in the north east. The Magnolia League (the sporting league), was headed by the chancellor of Vanderbilt university to combine the schools of Vanderbilt, SMU, Emory, Rice, Duke, and Tulane, within their own athletic conference, in order to promote the collaborative efforts of both education and athletics being held to a high standard within these universities. Unfortunately due to personal reasons on part of a few of these schools, the magnolia league or otherwise known as Southern Ivy, never became official.
Fast forward back to today, where my friend Paul Landon, founded his skincare brand “Magnolia League.” Paul has been a longtime client of mine, and friend. He’s like many men, who spend most of the week working, and loves to spend his weekends shooting a quick round of golf on the course at Bobby Jones here in the Buckhead area of Atlanta. So when Paul had the idea of Magnolia League, he realized that most men don’t have all the time in the world to commit to little things like skin care, so he wanted to make it easy.
With this brand, he has a few basic steps:
1. Face wash. You gotta take a shower as it is, (at least I hope you have that part down already) so he has a simple face wash for you to use while in the shower and your pores are open.
2. Moisturizer. An easy after shower or after a shave that can be used to help your face feel healthy and light and keep things from drying out. Taking some extra effort here will help your body regulate its oil production, so that your skin isn’t working overtime in order to keep your face from drying out.
3. SPF. A quick and easy protectant to make sure the sun doesn’t take your age so quickly while you’re out there enjoying the links.
So forget the 3 in 1 and do the work of 3 and done. And if you want to go even further, Magnolia League also offers a body wash in two scents.
Augusta: April Magnolia and Rosemary Mint.
Thomasville: Longleaf Pines & Quail Woods.
So men, take a chance and take care of your skin. You only have one body in this life, and if you’re lucky enough to live a life that give you the opportunity to take care of yourself, then be sure to do it.
